St. Teresa Medical Clinic
Last year when Father Frank returned to Uganda, he noticed that many parents were sitting on the porch around the school building. Many of these parents were moms with newborn babies. As he was talking to the mothers he noticed that one of them did not get up to greet him so he approached her and asked her how she was doing. She said she was so sorry to be disrespectful but she had just given birth and was not able to stand as she was very weak and ill. He noticed that she was holding a newborn baby. The next day he could tell that she was noticeably sicker and weaker and, with assistance from some teachers, was able to get her to a hospital. The nearest medical facility to the school is about an hour away. The next day he was told that the mom had passed away from an infection that occurred during childbirth, as most of the moms give birth in the home and there are times it is not the cleanest or safest place for them. The baby was able to be placed in an orphanage. As you can imagine, this affected him in a most profound way and he researched a way to get medical care closer to the school as that might have been a way to save this mom’s life.
